Report on Induction Programme _2010

Induction Programme for Freshers’ has been organised by the Department of Library and Information Science, Assam University, Silchar on August 16, 2010 at 11.30 A.M. The Induction Programme has been inaugurated by Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar & Chief Guest of the Programme by lighting the candles. The Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the dais have been felicitated by the students by offering the flower bouquet.

The Welcome Address was given by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Reader and Head of the Department. On behalf of the Department of Library and Information Science, Assam University, Silchar , Dr. Sinha welcomed Chief Guest Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee , Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar , Prof. Goutam Biswas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (HAD) & Librarian (I/C) Prof. G.P. Pandey, Dean , School of Information Science,; Mrs. Sumana Chakraborty, Deputy Librarian and Dr. Mukut Sharma, Assistant Professor , DLISc, all guests students and staff.

In his welcome address Dr. Sinha expressed his deep sense of gratitude to the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee for taking lot of efforts and keen interest in establishing this new Department of Library and Information Science. He said that all credits should go to the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor. He calls upon the faculty members, staff and fresher’s of this department to put all effort to make this a one of the best department and come forward to take the challenges for making the dream of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor come true. He extended best wishes to all the students on this occasion.

Prof. Goutam Biswas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (HAD) in his address extended best wishes to the newly admitted students and ask them that they are the pioneer batch of students of its debut department and they have to take the lead to make this department and the university proud as this is the professional course and there is a great demand in job market.

Prof. G.P. Pandey, Dean, School of Information Science, Assam University, Silchar in his address called upon the fresher’s to work hard to make this department number one department and extended best wishes to them. He has congratulated the students for choosing this course which has great scope in job market.

Mrs. Sumana Chakravorty, Deputy Librarian, in her message said that the Central Library is the laboratory for the Department and both should work together as a strong bond for making this department successful. She expressed her best wishes to all the students, staff and faculty members on this occasion.

Dr. Mukut Sarmah , Assistant Professor, DLISc, in his address expressed sincere thanks to the Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor for bringing out this department and called upon the students to stand for a while to honour his great contribution for establishing the new department of Library and Information Science in Assam University, Silchar.

Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee in his inaugural and presidential address expressed his satisfaction on the enrolment of the students in the department and for the commencement of classes in time. He presented a brief account of the genesis of the department and developmental aspects of the university to the new students. He congratulated the students being the pioneer and founder batch of the department and called upon the students to take all the efforts for taking this department at a prestigious height and make us proud. He congratulated Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Head of the Department and his team for the time completion of the admission process and commencement of the classes. He also promised to extend all sorts of help and support for strengthening the department and establishing the state –of –the Art Computer Laboratory / Internet Laboratory, Seminar Library or Departmental Library for smooth teaching –learning activities.

On behalf of the Department of Library and Information Science Dr. Mukut Sarmah, Asst Professor, DLISc has offered Vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, other invitees and students for attending the programme and making this programme a grand success.

At the end of the programme, the students, staff and faculty members of the Department of Library and Information Science presented Cultural Programme.

The event was anchored by Master Nirnimesh Pandiya and Ms Sehnara Begam Laskar of the Department and the entire programme was well coordinated by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, HOD, Department of Library and Information Science, Assam University, Silchar.

LIBRARIANS' DAY OBSERVED AT ASSAM UNIVERSITY, SILCHAR

The Department of Library and Information Science & Rabindra (Central) Library, Assam University, Silchar have jointly organised One Day Programme on “Librarians’ Day” on 12th August, 2010 at 11.30 A.M. in the new building of the Department of Library and Information Science, Assam University, Silchar in honour of the great visionary and doyen of Library and Information Science Profession in India and abroad. .

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Goutam Biswas , Hon’ble Pro-Vice-Chancellor (HAD) with lighting of the candles and offering floral tribute to Dr. Shiyali Ramamitra Ranganathan (9th August 1892 – 27th September , 1972) who has been regarded as the Father of Library and Information Science in India.

The Programme was started with inviting Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the dais. Then the Candles were lighted by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries available in the function. The Chief Guests and Other dignitaries were felicitated by offering of flower bouquet by the students and staff of the Department of Library and Information Science & Central Library .

The Chief Guest has presided over the remaining programme after lighting of candles and offering floral tribute to Dr. S .R. Ranganathan on his 119th Birth Anniversary . The President of the programme has invited Prof. G.D. Sharma, (PVC- STM) to address the students and LIS professionals.

In his address Prof. G.D. Sharma, Hon’ble PVC (STM) conveyed the “Message of Best Wishes to HOD and Faculty members of the Department of Library and Information Science and Library Professionals working in the Central Library” sent by Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee , Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor , Assam University, Silchar for successfully organising the event . Prof. Sharma then highlighted the importance of E-resources and asked the Library & Information Professionals to take the challenges of the various needs and information seeking behaviors of the library users in fast changing world of ICT and E-Resources.

Prof. G.P. Pandey, Dean , School of Information Science in his message said that Dr. S.R. Ranganthan was a towering personality and has contributed a lot for the development of Library and Information Science in India and abroad. He also emphasized the importance of Five Laws of Library and Information Science in the ICT era. He extended best wishes to all the participants on the eve of Librarians’ Day.

Dr. Nirnajan Roy , Director, IQAC in his address said that Dr. S.R. Ranganathan was a great visionary and informed the house about the Padmashree Award conferred to him by the Govt. of India. He emphasized the need of using the resources for the class assignment, research and development activities. He extended best wishes to all the LIS professionals on this occasion.

Prof. S. B. Paul , Department of Chemistry extended his best wishes to all the professionals . He congratulated Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, HOD , Faculty Members and Staff members of Department of Library and Information Science and LIS professionals and Staff from the Central Library for organising such academic and colourful event in very short period of time. He also informed the house that he would extend all cooperation and help for the Department of Library and Information Science, AUS.

Dr. Manbendra Datta Choudhury, Proctor, Assam University, Silchar in his address highlighted the importance of e-resources and he said about the E-resources available under the DELCON Programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for their extensive utilization. The facilities of this programme have been extended to S. S. College Hailakandi and other Colleges affiliated under Assam University, Silchar.

Sri Divakar Kanunjanan, Finance Officer in his address extended best wishes to all the LIS professionals. He congratulated Dr. M. K. Sinha, HOD, DLISc and his team for organising beautiful event in very short period of time.

The Welcome address was presented by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Head of the Department, Department of Library and Information Science, AUS. In his welcome address he has presented a brief account of the contribution of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan in the areas of Library and Information Science. While highlighting the contributions of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan , who is the architect of modern librarianship in India , he informed the house regarding his publications and contributions regarding drafting of Model Public Library Act which has been referred and consulted while framing the Public Library Act by the various State Governments from 1948 to 1990 for the enactment of Library Legislation in the respective states. On this occasion he welcomed the Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the dais, all Dean, HODs, Officers, staff and students present in the programme. He call upon all the Library and Information Professionals to take the challenges of ICT, Digital and Web Technologies and make themselves ICT empowered and efficient to extend effective and relevant library services to the library users in the changing environment.

Mrs. Suman Chakarborty, Deputy Librarian, Assam University, Silchar in her address told that there should be a strong bond between the Central Library and the Department of Library and Information Science to achieve best results. On this occasion she extended best wishes to all the LIS professionals who have participated in the programme.

On behalf of the students of the Department of Library and Information Science, Sri Prasher Deb in his address told that effective library services should be provided to all the library users.

Then the Inaugural Address was given by the Chief Guest, Prof. Goutam Biswas, Hon’ble P.V.C. (HAD). While addressing the LIS Professionals he has extended his best wishes to all the Library and Information Science Professionals on the eve of Librarians’ Day and congratulated Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha , HOD and his team for successfully organizing the event in befitting manner. He also recited the few paragraphs of a book written by Kavi Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore in which Kavi Guru has written a chapter on the “ Importance of Library” . He said that the Librarians Day should be organised every year clubbing the programme with one or two days Seminar, Symposia and Workshop by inviting all the professionals of the regions and eminent subject experts for live interactions and sharing of knowledge amongst the professionals.

At the end the programme, the Vote of Thanks was offered by Dr. Mukut Sarmah , Assistant Professor , DLISc , AUS . On the Behalf of the Department of Library and Information Science and Central Library (Rabindra Library) , Dr. Sarmah extended heartfelt thanks to the Chief Guest and all the dignitaries and the audience for their participation and cooperation.

The cultural programme was organised by the students , staff and faculty members after formal offering of vote of thanks.

The entire event was anchored and coordinated by Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, HOD, Department of Library and Information Science, Assam University, Silchar.

Report on Two Days Workshop on Framing of Syllabus

A Two Days Workshop on Framing of Syllabus for the Master of Library and Information Science Programme has been organised by Assam University, Silchar during February 11-12, 2010.
At the outset Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar welcomed all the External Expert Members attending the workshop and also other members and appraised about the genesis and background of the Department of Library Science, AUS. He called upon the Subject Experts (both external and internal) to prepare syllabus integrating both traditional and modern concepts for Master Degree in Library and Information Science to be offered by the Dept of Library Science, AUS. He also suggested to take into consideration of the ICT and its application. Further, he also suggested identifying the requirements / resources necessary for starting the Master degree program. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor also suggested to make syllabus that suits to meet the needs of the dynamic environment. He also declared that this program will be offered from the academic year 2010-11.
Prof. Goutam Biswas, Hon’ble PVC (H& AD), Assam University, Silchar suggested to prepare the syllabus with an emphasis on application of modern technology.
Prof. G.D. Sharma, Hon’ble PVC (STM) also informed the experts to design the syllabus, which should enable the students to learn the skills and enable them to get suitable jobs after completion of course.
Prof. G.P. Pandey, Dean, School of Information Science, Assam University, suggested to put components that enable the students to handle the tools and techniques in the modern libraries.
Dr. P. Debnath, CoE, Assam University, Silchar explained the guidelines for framing syllabus. He suggested to have 20 papers each of 100 marks with a total of 2000 marks for the whole program i.e. four semesters. He also suggested dividing each paper into five units. Further, he also suggested to divide 100 marks into 25 for Internal Assessment and 75 marks for the University examination. He also pointed out that the syllabus should be designed in such a way that it should be easy to shift the same to the Choice Based Credit System with few open papers which may be offered for the students from other Departments.
Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Reader & Head, Department of Library Science, Assam University, Silchar delivered a power point presentation on Draft Syllabus for discussion and finalization of syllabus.
Amongst the eternal members , four eminent subject experts viz., Prof. N. Laxman Rao, Emeritus Professor, UGC , Dept of Library & Information Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad; Prof. Narendra Lahkar, Department of Library & Information , Gauhati University, Guwahati; Prof. Pijuskanti Panigrahi, Head, Department of Library & Information Science , Calcutta University, Kolkata and Dr. Saptarishi Ghosh , Head, Department of Library & Information Science , North Bengal University, Darjeeling have been invited for framing the syllabus for MLIS Course.
Amongst the internal faculty members/ officers , Prof. G.P. Pandey , Dean , School of Information Science, Department of Mass Communication, Assam University ; Dr. P. Debnath, Controller of Examinations, AUS ; Dr. Bibhash Dev, Deputy Registrar (Academic) , AUS ; Dr. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Reader & Head, Department of Library Science, Assam University, Silchar ; Dr. Mukut Sarmah, Assistant Professor, Department of Library Science, Md. Ziaur Rahman Assistant Professor , Department of Library Science , Dr. Pankaj Dev Sarmah , Head, Department of Computer Science and Sri Jayanta Bhattacharjee , Information Scientist & Deputy Registrar ( Exam ) I/ C have participated in the workshop and contributed a lot for framing of syllabus.
After the continuous efforts, brainstorming threadbare discussion made by all the external subject experts and internal faculty members and officers for two days, the Draft Syllabus for the Two Year Masters Degree in Library and Information Science Programme has been designed and developed and the same has been put forwarded before the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tapodhir Bhattacharjee for perusal and consideration.
After approval of Syllabus in Board of Post-Graduate Study, and School Board, the Draft Syllabus will be placed before the forthcoming Academic Council Meeting scheduled to be held on April 23., 2010 and the finally before the Executive Council Meeting scheduled to be held on April 30, 2010 for its final approval.

Change in Nomenclature of Department of Library Science, Assam University, Silchar

On the recommendation of the Board of Post-Graduate Studies in Library Science, School Board and Academci Council, Assam University, Silchar , the nomenclature of department of Library Science has been changed from Department of Library Science to Department of Library and Information Science w.e.f. May 2010 after the final approval from the Executive Council, Assam Univesity, Silchar.
